Comprehensive but…
While planning for the holiday recently, I realized that boot space was just not going to be sufficient to fit everything I planned to pack, and that I would have to hire a trailer if I was going to take half the house with me.
This led to its own set of problems, as I would have to hire a trailer because I did not own one, and I would have to purchase and install a tow bar to my vehicle.
So off I went to the nearest dealer who would be able to assist me with this. After having a rather expensive apparently state of the art tow bar installed I was surprised to hear that I needed to add this to my vehicle insurance cover as an additional accessory because it was not automatically covered.
I arrived home and contacted my insurer who informed me that this was in fact the case and that I would have to specify the tow bar to enjoy cover for it at an additional premium.
There are in fact a number of non standard accessories that need to be specified for cover and this can range from metallic paint on your vehicle to mag rims on your wheels.
The best way of approaching this and ensuring that you are adequately covered would be to discuss all the non standard (non factory fitted) additions to your vehicle with your insurance agent when covering your vehicle.
Also consider the retail price on a new vehicle and check the quote to see what you are paying for additionally over and above the retail amount of the vehicle as this could also give you some indication
