By now, most of us have stuffed the turkey and wrapped the presents. The only thing left to do is sit back, relax, and wait for the festivities to begin.
While Christmas and New Year is a time for merriment and joy it is difficult to ignore the carnage on our roads highlighted in the news over this period.
Statistics show that driving under the influence of alcohol accounts for half of the estimated 18000 deaths and 150000 serious injuries on our roads every year.
It is also important to consider the “influence” of drunk driving on your vehicle insurance cover.
Insurance policies always consider breaching of the law as an exclusion of cover, and driving under the influence of alcohol is a criminal offence.
Being involved in a motor vehicle accident if you are found to be over the legal alcohol limit (whether you were at fault in the accident or not), will almost certainly result in non payment of your insurance claim.
So make sure you plan ahead the next time you think you will be over indulging. Nominate a driver for the event, or arrange to stay over. If the latter isn’t possible then leave the car at home and make use of one of the many alternative methods of transport available in the market.
May you and your family enjoy a blessed Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
Safe driving !
