Light at the end of the tunnel
If you live in South Africa chances are, at some point you will be affected by the power shortage our country is experiencing.
For those of us who have a family to take care of, or even just a favorite TV program to watch this can be extremely frustrating.
But what happens when you suffer a loss as a result of the power failures?
Very often the resulting surges when electricity is turned back on could cause damage to expensive electrical equipment in our homes and offices.
There are also other damages that could be suffered. Fridge or freezer content that could spoil should the failure duration be more than a couple of hours. Electrical fittings such as geysers could suffer damage.
If you have your own business you could suffer a loss of income due to the inability to trade without electricity.
While in many cases it is possible to attempt to instate a claim for a loss against the relevant responsible entity this may be a time consuming and often futile process.
Having said this, it is not always possible for an individual to absorb such a loss and therefore we should explore the avenue of insurance cover for such instances.
While this cover is not usually available on its own, a number of insurance companies include it in their household or home owner’s policies.
If you have business cover you may also find that this policy includes cover for loss or damage suffered as a result of a power failure.
The best approach would be to contact your insurance consultant and ask them to verify or confirm whether you have cover for such an eventuality.
Informed insuring!
