Metropolitan gets new board members

The board of Metropolitan (MET) has unanimously approved the appointment of JJ Njeke as group chairman.

JJ, a chartered accountant and former audit partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers, is currently managing director of the Kagiso group and deputy chairman of Kagiso Media.

He joined the board of Metropolitan as a non-executive director in 2004 when Metropolitan and KTI concluded their strategic empowerment partnership.

JJ has been acting chairman of Metropolitan since the resignation of Professor Wiseman Nkuhlu in March last year.

The appointment of Joyce Matlala, group financial director of KTI, as a non-executive director of Metropolitan was announced at the same time.

Joyce takes the place of Andile Sangqu whose resignation as a KTI nominated director took effect in December last year on his leaving the employ of KTI.

Joyce, also a qualified chartered accountant, has wide-ranging experience across the financial services sector that will complement the depth and breadth of expertise of Metropolitan's existing board members.

Mary Vilakazi, whose non-executive directorship was announced in November 2009, is the third women chartered accountant to join the board of the group, the other being Fatima Jakoet.

Mary, a member of the Council of the SA Institute of Chartered Accountants (Southern Region), is the chief financial officer of the Mineral Services (MS) Group and also serves on the minister of finance's long-term insurance advisory committee as well as the audit committee of the CCMA.
